After studying musical theatre, in 2007, Jepps placed third in the fifth season of Canadian Civil. In 2008, Jepps released her first album of music-influenced music, Tug of War, in Canada.

Jepps has an older brother, Colin, and a younger sister, Katie. She attended Heritage Park High School and enjoyed musical theater, appearing in studio productions of Annie where she played Annie, Grease where she played Sandy Olson, and The Wiz where she played Dorothy Gale.
Her parents and father were teachers, so Jepps considered a career in music education as a second option.
She applied to music-related programs, including those at Capilano University and the University of British Columbia, but on the advice of her high school drama teacher, she transferred to the Canadian College of the Arts in Victoria, British Columbia and was one of 25 female students to enter their year-round program in 2004.
After graduation, Jepps moved to the west side of Vancouver and held many jobs, including barista, chef’s assistant, and barter. During this time, she slept on the couch and wrote songs in her spare time.

The song received promotion from Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber, leading Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, to sign Jeps to a worldwide record deal with his label, Schoolboy Records, and major label Interscope Records.
“Call Me Maybe” reached number one on the Canadian Hot 100, making Jepps the fourth Canadian artist to top the chart.
In the United States, the single spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, earning the title of “Song of the Summer” by Billboard magazine.
