Can someone help me with some in depth information on how to cut and fit the speakers to the sail panel area?

There’s no need to cut anything into the sail panels to insert the speakers, as these machines come with 6x9s (well, most of them) to begin with. Have you removed the sail panel covers? Some speakers may require you to widen the opening a bit, but it doesn’t matter.

Yes I took the sail panel off and there is just a bare sheet with no holes for the speakers, I think because I had some of these cars with a high end bose system from the factory.

Is the plastic trim panel solid or is the steel panel under the trim attached to the car? If it’s just a bolt-on plate, you can get 6×9″ mounting plates from another Camaro/Firebird and screw them on.

My NOS panels came with no cutout for the rear speaker, but the plastic wasn’t thicker…just a cutout to open the speaker and holes for the fabric sail panel to secure it.

I think if I go all the way and remove the panel there will be something behind it.

If it were me, I’d pull the uncut panels and put them in storage, then get a set of scrap panels already cut for the rear speakers. You’ll probably never want to go back, but if you do, hardboards will be nearly impossible to find.

If you want to cut holes or take a used panel and panels you already have.

There’s nothing wrong with the solid panel, but I don’t do padding so it’s not a big deal for me.

Click to expand… Both were factory sail panels painted only by specialty paint shops. A very cheap upgrade compared to buying carbon. The first one broke after I got it and I had it welded and reinforced with plastic and then painted for $350. It cost me $250 to paint the second one!

My first intention was to do carbon fiber but after I got the car and showed it to my dad and talked about it……..he said carbon fiber wouldn’t fit… …he said why go to the last one look like you! So I tried and started getting into it, but it was hard to get a color match and I almost gave up. They are carbon fiber, which is close, but as I understand it, the factory carbon fiber is not a perfect fit. I’m super excited about how it turned out, but a little nervous about how it would turn out……but it turned out great!

We have recently started producing carbon pattern sail panels to match the factory roof and sunroofs for anyone interested.

I think the green sail panel to match the body color is a great look. I’m sure I’d like all the carbon roofs, sails and tailgates if they fit, but I think I prefer the green sail panel that contrasts with the carbon roof and tailgates. Blessings!

This is an old thread, you are not getting a reply and you may want to revive the old thread. Please consider creating a new thread. The sail panels of the 4th generation F-body are attached to the car body using glue (urethane). The problem with painting a sail panel is that the glue runs off the panel and bubbles form on the surface of the panel. The cause of the leak appears to be a lack of paint/epoxy primer on the panel side, a process change that started at GM on very late ’98 cars (05/98 and later at risk) and affected everyone. ’99+ models. This allows the glue to come into direct contact with the panel and soak into it over time. It appears that the glue will seep through the panel after heat/UV exposure.

Sail Panel Tweeter Frustrations!

Sandblasting/painting/gluing/etc. it does not fix the situation. A complete panel replacement is the only permanent fix. Once the glue is on the panel, there is no way to fix it from above. The problem is that nothing you do above and below will change that. The only other option is to never drive in sunlight.
