In the small Dutch village of Giethoorn, the silence is almost dreamlike. That is, until you remember why it’s so quiet – no cars. In fact, there is no way for cars to move because there is no road. Locals and visitors to Giethoorn navigate quietly: by bike, boat or foot. There’s not much to do in this town, a collection of small peat islands connected by bridges, except to be alone among the thatched farmhouses and footbridges that cross the maze of canals. .
The name of the village dates back to the 13th century (the time when it seems to have been settled). The story goes that the original farmer-settlers discovered a collection of horns from wild goats that were believed to have died in the 1170 flood. “Goat’s Horn” or “Geytenhoren” was shortened to Giethoorn and the name stuck. Centuries after the flood, water continues to define the village’s living history and landscape.
In nearby De Weerribben-Wieden National Park, wildlife enthusiasts hike through wetlands and reedbeds home to otters, black terns, great cormorants and buzzards. Of course, you can ride along the waterways by rowing boats and canoes or along the many hiking trails. Without engine noise, the sounds of nature bring life to the scene for all the senses.

Jan Brouwer, Your Shot photographer, recently captured the tranquility of Giethoorn along the canal called Binnenpad, which Brouwer recommends as a unique place for viewing the bridges and village houses. To appreciate the golden hours of the day, set your alarm for 6 am and head to the canal to take photos before the boats hit the water. Or wait after 6pm. when guests tend to disperse. This alone allows you to stay in one of the opulent local bed and breakfasts and avoid the crowded day tours.
Giethoorn can be reached by train and bus. Choose April, May, June or September to avoid the crowds, and remember that weekday visits may be best. Although this “Venice of the Netherlands” may seem a bit far from the capital city of Amsterdam, it is only about 75 miles away. And the two-hour journey is worth the feeling of traveling back in time.
These powerful carnivores spend more time around people and looking for food. A portable radar unit can prevent these types of encounters that rarely end well.
We crave food at night – this makes sense when people only care about surviving the day. But science shows that in order to live longer and healthier lives, we need to override our instincts.
