The relay gets power from one of 2 fuses, depending on whether the Hazard switch is working or not. The same flasher is used for Turn Indicator and Hazard functions.
Turn Signals Rewire
The flasher’s internal circuit puts a small “sense” voltage on Terminal # 49a at all times. When the Indicator stalk is pulled to the left or right, the indicator bulb on that side connects to Terminal #49a and activates the flashing circuit so it knows to start flashing. Immediately the internal relay contact closes from (+) to #49a and the light comes on. The electronic circuit then switches the relay on and off to produce a lightning circuit.
The 4-terminal flasher has an internal load-sensing relay that carries the dash signal. The dashboard indicators illuminate in time with the Turn Indicator bulb.
The dash speed indicator bulb used for the 3-terminal turn signal relay connects to the (+) supply to #49a and illuminates opposite the Turn Indicator bulb. For example, when the Turn Signal light is on, there is +12V at #49a. This means that both sides of the dash bulb have +12V on them and no current can flow through the bulb.
The only difference between the Danger Circuit operation is that the flasher is powered by a secondary fuse, which is lit whether the Ignition is on or not. The Hazard Switch has another set of contacts (not shown here) that connect the left and right light bulbs.
How To Fix Fast Flashing Led Turnsignals
Later Beetles and buses that had separate rear brake and turn signals used a simple hazard flasher arrangement. I have written here in a diagram showing the mechanical operation of the switch connection.
The end of the lamp connects the left and right bulbs for a short time #49a to the lamp so that all 4 bulbs are lit.
Let’s take a look at the Turn Signal system used in older cars. From the mid-1950s to 1961, cars without semaphores used a Stop light to double as a Turn signal. To do this, a special 6-wire Signal switch was used instead of the later 3-wire design. This switch had to direct the power source to the brake light that was used for the Turn signal while allowing the rest of the brake light to operate from the Off switch. The circuit is as follows:
This arrangement was also used on (US) buses until the 1971 model year. Only ’72 US buses had Stop and Turn bulbs.
Wiring Kit For Front Rizoma Turn Signals
The ’62 through ’65 models used a switch and relay to provide 4 flashing lights. The lights connected the two lights to a relay and the relay connected to the flasher. The relay again used the front left and right signals from separate fuel sources. In other words, the relay turns on and off, in time with the flasher, turning on the light.
9-Terminal Flasher on Buses Starting with the ’66 model and continuing into early ’68, the popular 9-terminal flasher was used. Matt Robards has done a great job of explaining how the circuit works and I won’t try to repeat it here. For more information, go to:
From late ’68 to ’71, the 6-Wire Turn Indicator switch was mated to a solid Hazard switch to eliminate the expensive 9-terminal flasher. A composite diagram is shown here:

American buses from ’66 to ’71 can be equipped with a separate brake light (or separate circuit) by inserting a wire into the Main wire from front to rear. The Blk/Red wire from the master cylinder brake switch must be disconnected first. This wire can be found on the #54 9-terminal light or on the Hazard switch on rear buses that do not have a 9-terminal light.The new wire can be connected to the Blk/Red wire. or connected directly to the brake switch.
