How To Paint A Motorcycle Frame – Want to change the frame color to match your bike? number? Okay, today was fun! I finally took the plunge and decided to paint the frame matte black to match what I did to the forks and give it a nicer orange tank/rear end. I was nervous at first, but everything went according to plan and it turned out great! I decided to share with you what I did in the process of this project. This is because I have shared past projects (including twine and other issues). First remove the tank and fairing and camouflage it! What a problem trying to mask around the engine! After masking, I scraped the surface and applied two coats of primer using Plasticoat Sandable Primer (black). I am excited to see the finished project. I checked all the gaps to make sure I avoided the entire frame. Surprisingly, I didn’t miss a place. Allow each coat to dry for 15 minutes, then apply another coat, then allow the base coat to dry for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Apply a top coat to this Franken Triple. I used Plasticoat again, but with high temperature paint. It is able to withstand 1300 degrees. It seems like overkill, but if my triple falls into focus, at least I know the color is solid. This particular satin black looks amazing in the sun! After applying the first two coats, I couldn’t help but be impressed. Last but not least, the finished project. Honestly, it was a huge hit and only cost me $30. Cheap and very effective. The spray was very easy to use and covered all the frames on the triple! I was hoping that some places would be missing, but there weren’t. Before and after: The day I bought it and now. Feel free to send questions or anything if you are interested in this process. I’m here to share.
DFUSEME says: well done. looks great! ! ! Click to enlarge… Thanks. I like how it looks now. Too much silver and it didn’t look right. something had to be done about it.

I thought the silver rims would be fine, but yesterday I accidentally painted them black. I wouldn’t recommend doing this with a bike wheel like I did.

It looks killer! I generally don’t like the look of this generation, but yours is awesome. What kind of headlights do you have?
2. Most of these high temperature coating resins must be heated to fairly high temperatures to fully cure. Check the directions on the can to find out what it is. At temperatures well above 180 degrees Fahrenheit, the frame is unlikely to get as hot as it ever was, so care must be taken not to scratch it. It hardens over time at low temperatures.

1. The frame is already thick so I didn’t scratch it. and degreased.

2. It should cure at 200 degrees for 30 minutes, but I used a heat gun for about 20 minutes to get it through. It seems a little stiff, but after 4 coats and almost an hour of drying between coats, there is very little chance of it coming off. We simulated some aggressive abrasions to see if it chipped and to test if it’s rock hard. pretty sure the frame is only 200 internally so it might be made of something that wasn’t very high temp but it’s a very good paint
Painting the frame without removing the engine and everything is a bit of a challenge, but we did it! congratulations

If you apply it at a right angle, it creates a hidden part so you can paint evenly inside the frame.

Well, whether you’re trying to save a few bucks or like the challenge of doing everything yourself, you’re probably going to paint yourself at some point, I’d consider a motorcycle. However, not everyone has an air compressor or a spray booth and a proper spray gun at home.
But who says you can’t spray paint a home workshop motorcycle? You may not get the same results as a professional painter using a spray booth. They are not as durable as modern two-component automotive paints. And if you change your mind, you’ll spend time and money stripping it and sending it to a professional.
But if you want to learn a new skill, get a perfect color match, or get the satisfaction of doing it yourself, join me to accelerate your learning.
If you learn, practice, and follow this process, you’ll end up with a coating you’ll be happy with in your home shop. So we divided the process into 6 steps. We will cover the first three this week and the rest next week.

Before you begin, contact your local auto body supplier for detailed product information and recommendations. After reading this article, you should be able to ask intelligent questions.
Step 1: Consider the final touches What is the color scheme of your project? Will there be inscriptions, decals, patterns, lines? Flakes or flat colors? Gloss or matte?
Once the finishing touches are decided, it will help determine the painting process and products required. A rough draft of the painting scheme will help you plan the painting process. So don’t be afraid to make a sketch of your design.
Step 2: Choose a paint system Assuming you don’t have an air compressor for this process, your color choices are somewhat limited. Now let’s discuss some of the terminologies you may hear when it comes to painting techniques.
Frankentriple Diy Frame Painting
A one-step coating is a paint that provides color and shine in one layer. Two-stage painting requires one coat of paint for the color and another coat of paint for the protective clear coat (glossy or matte). These two-stage products are commonly referred to as primer/clearcoat systems.
1K coating is a coating that does not require hardeners, activators or other products for curing. Home paint is a prime example of such products. A one-off striped email is another thing. (Most aerosol paints also fall into this category.)
2K coatings are products that are mixed with a hardener just before spraying to activate a chemical reaction during drying. This provides a durable finish that is resistant to weather, UV, fuel and chemical damage. Your average body shop sprays a 2K finish on modern cars.
