Modifying Driver Seat To Increase Leg Room
There are cars with decent legroom for us, and there are ways to modify the seat rails for more legroom. But what if you already have a low legroom car that you can’t, for whatever reason, modify?
I’ll tell you the solution I use that is surprisingly effective and has probably been done by most people at one time or another, maybe more. First of all, though, I would say that I would not recommend anyone do this because I’m not 100% sure about the legality, it could be considered dangerous, and I won’t be held responsible for any damages that might result from someone doing it.
Driving without shoes. But the soles of the shoes are only an inch or two thick, you say, how much difference does that make? Quite a difference, I tell you. Beyond the added material, the soles are stiff and cannot adapt to the footwell and pedal in the same way that a foot can. If I had to try, I’d say that driving without shoes is the same as adding almost three inches to the overall space in a car. Three centimeters are extremely valuable when you’re edging too long for your vehicle!
Some might even say it’s dangerous. Your foot could slip off the pedal, brake pressure can be discouraged by any debris between your soft foot and the pedal, or worn shoes can get stuck under the pedals, and your feet won’t be properly protected in the unfortunate event. from an accident or a sudden departure from the car. But I haven’t found any real published scientific evidence that finds it more dangerous. And even if it did exist, the associated risks couldn’t outweigh the risks of driving without enough legroom.

I even read from a redditor that his driving instructor actually told him to start riding barefoot because it gives better pedal feel. I added that one always wears the same bare feet, as if tied to many pairs of shoes, which is better for familiarity.
Others may say that driving without shoes is inconvenient and your feet will get cold and sweaty. But for me, taking my shoe became second nature. And I take care that there is no mud, snow, etc., where I rest my foot and that the heat comes out through the leg fans.
Well, what about the legality of this? I have scoured the web and for the most part there tends to be an agreement that it is not illegal.
Officer: “Yeah, there’s no law against it, just don’t drive like an idiot and if you’re in trouble, put your shoe on before you go out.”

This conversation may seem like a lifetime for the police officer, but I thought it was worth telling us that people have really struggled with inadequate legroom. However, keep in mind that the laws on this could be very different where you live. Also, I seem to have a general feeling that if one was involved in an accident and was barefoot at the time, this may become a factor in determining fault for the accident, perhaps regarded as reckless guidance, for example. .
All of that said, another way to regain lost space without any misfortune or legal concern is to pick up some minimalist barefoot shoes (perhaps avoiding flip-flops as they’ve been deemed risky). Similarly, removing thick snow and mud mats is helpful. And there are seat-rail extensions, too, though this can result in more stooping to reach the steering wheel. Beyond reclaiming space, cruise control, adaptive braking, and eventually robots that take over the entire driving process are also useful.

I have access to a milling center and can fabricate something to move the seat further back, but I am concerned about the functionality and safety aspects.
I had the same requirement and did a DIY to increase the legroom in my Pajero. Look at the photos in this post. It’s going to be a simple DIY. You only need 4-inch steel bars with holes in each end. Use as extensions to mount the original seat rails.

Thanks. I had something similar in mind, but was only concerned with the safety aspect in case of an accident.

The other option I considered was to drill new holes in the floor and move the entire seat. I didn’t go that route because I didn’t want to drill holes in the car. That may be a safer option since it moves the entire seat, but in the same plane. Safety comes first, so keep that in mind before making any changes.
Instead of drilling holes in the floor, drill a new set of mating holes in the adjuster frame. To position the seat 2″ back, the new holes will be 2″ to the front.
A knee replacement is performed to relieve pain and increase mobility; I think rather than trying to increase the legroom in front of the car, I suggest you go back to the doctor who operated on you. My intuition is that the operation was not a success and
