Do You Tip Massage Therapists – Welcome back to another post. You guys keep asking questions, so I’m making these posts to provide answers based on my personal experiences and thoughts.

Tipping is very common today. We do it everywhere: coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, bars, taxis, takeout, the list is really endless! Here’s a fun fact I bet you didn’t know:

The wiki has a good description of the history of tips; here is a link to the article if you are interested in reading it. But I encourage you to think: why do we tip? Is it because it’s almost a habit to do something like that, and if you don’t, you’re breaking the norm?

Is Massage Therapy Covered By Insurance?

Now I know some people don’t agree with this attitude, mostly because you have to tip them anyway. I don’t agree with this approach, but it’s just my opinion. Tipping is objective (also personal to some extent!), so everyone has and is entitled to an opinion.

But what if the service is good and worth tipping? How much should you tip a massage therapist?

Before I tell you what I usually tip, I should tell you that there really is no right or wrong here. There is no magic number that works in all situations.

So if a class costs $90, I usually tip about $10. This is when I am completely satisfied with the service provided that I would consider going back again. Too little, too much? It’s up to you!

How Much To Tip For A Massage

When it comes to massages, tipping isn’t something I have to think too much about. To me, it’s pretty clear when to tip and when not to. My advice to you:

This last point is particularly important. Most people feel guilty if they don’t leave a “enough” tip. When it comes to massage therapy, your tip doesn’t make or break their business!

There are establishments with good, hardworking, experienced therapists who should be tipped more, just like some crappy establishments with therapists who couldn’t save their lives with massages! I don’t think the latter is worth anything. Somehow choosing not to tip would give some sort of indication that their service is below par. Perhaps then an honest, self-reflective assessment can stimulate change!

However, I suggest that your tip should be based on the rate that non-members would pay for the same service.

Tipping is part of massage culture and can confuse customers. Many customers do not know if and when they should tip

They know how to tip, they are often not sure how much or where to leave. I’ve even worked with clients who thought therapists would get in trouble for accepting tips. They would slip money into my hand or pocket and whisper that it was a gift for me.

It’s nice that clients want me to feel valued, but I also want the system to be completely transparent. It shouldn’t be so embarrassing.

Private Practice Massage Therapist Job

There are instances in massage where tipping is discouraged or not allowed at all, but usually establishments make an effort to inform clients about their policy. Some even take it a step further by suggesting how much to leave the therapist. In this article, I give some tips on how and when to tip your massage therapist. There are three types of massage settings with slightly different tip cultures. How do these cultures differ from a progressive perspective? Read on to find out how!

“… Often agencies make an effort to inform clients of their policy, and some even go so far as to further assist by advising how much they leave the therapist.”

There are a few ways to intuitively tell when you should tip your massage therapist. The best way to determine if your tip (or the right question to ask) is to look at the type of establishment. There are many different types of spas, and they all have their own rules. The advice I make does not apply to every independent agency; it’s always worth asking. Here are the patterns I have observed at various establishments that offer massage.

If you book a massage at a large spa chain or an establishment that operates as part of a franchise, your therapist will most likely be paid a percentage of what you paid for the massage. Percentages vary, but on average your therapist will get less than 20% of what the agency charges. That might not seem like a bad idea, but if you pay $100 for an hour-long session, your therapist will probably make about $15 of the $100 you give to the studio.

Also keep in mind that these types of studios typically do not charge therapists by the hour. Instead, they pay per massage. This means that in between meetings where they spend time talking to you, dressing or undressing you,
