Tipping is very common today. We do it everywhere: coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, bars, taxis, takeout, the list is really endless! Here’s a fun fact I bet you didn’t know:

Now I know some people don’t agree with this attitude, mostly because you have to tip them anyway. I don’t agree with this approach, but it’s just my opinion. Tipping is objective (also personal to some extent!), so everyone has and is entitled to an opinion.

But what if the service is good and worth tipping? How much should you tip a massage therapist?

Before I tell you what I usually tip, I should tell you that there really is no right or wrong here. There is no magic number that works in all situations.

So if a class costs $90, I usually tip about $10. This is when I am completely satisfied with the service provided that I would consider going back again. Too little, too much? It’s up to you!

There are establishments with good, hardworking, experienced therapists who should be tipped more, just like some crappy establishments with therapists who couldn’t save their lives with massages! I don’t think the latter is worth anything. Somehow choosing not to tip would give some sort of indication that their service is below par. Perhaps then an honest, self-reflective assessment can stimulate change!

The company follows a “membership” model. This means that Massage Envy members pay different or lower prices than non-members.

So here are a few things to consider when determining the right amount to tip Massage Envy:

In general, a tip for luxury service is usually between 10% and 20% of the bill.

There are many different types of spas, and they all have their own rules. The advice I make does not apply to every independent agency; it’s always worth asking. Here are the patterns I have observed at various establishments that offer massage.

If you book a massage at a large spa chain or an establishment that operates as part of a franchise, your therapist will most likely be paid a percentage of what you paid for the massage. Percentages vary, but on average your therapist will get less than 20% of what the agency charges. That might not seem like a bad idea, but if you pay $100 for an hour-long session, your therapist will probably make about $15 of the $100 you give to the studio.
