Do You Need A Car In Naxos – It is possible to have a good time in Naxos without a car. But hiring one will definitely allow you to explore more and on your own schedule. For accommodation outside the areas of Chora, Stelida, Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka, you may need to rent a car.

If you live in Chora or any of the tourist spots listed above, the bus will serve you well. There are buses that go to the traditional villages, so you can see some of them that way.

Car Rentals In Giardini Naxos

In Naxos you cannot hire a moped unless you are an experienced moped/cyclist. You can rent an ATV (all terrain vehicle). However, in my personal opinion, a car is much safer for Naxos.

For example, if you are driving an ATV from the sands of Plaka to town, you may decide that this is the best option for you.

However, car accidents are common in Greece and usually involve motorcycles/mopeds or ATVs. Greece has a higher rate of motorcycle fatalities than any other EU country. They are more common in the summer months and in tourist areas.

You are very weak on two wheels, even an ATV. They may feel solid on four wheels, but if you’re going uphill or on uneven ground, they may fall off.

Naxos is a relatively large island with many hills. Even ATVs can fight regardless of speed. In addition, with the mountains, there are many turns, some of which do not have fences. Cars (and bigger cars) approach these corners without care. So you get more car protection.

Most of the rental cars in Naxos are small economy models or large models, such as Fiat Pandas and Citroen Spark. Be aware that most of the roads on the island are narrow. They pass through villages that are not built to support machines. A small one is suitable for driving from village to village.

If you want something more exciting, you still have options. However, road conditions must be taken into account. If you stay on a dirt track or want to go further and harder to reach beaches, don’t order fancy things like a small car or an Audi TT!

You need something like a Jeep Wrangler. It will better deal with the loose line you drive, and the extra height will help prevent rocks from damaging the sides.

Reasons Naxos Is The Best Greek Island (for Pretty Much Everything)

It may be in your car rental agreement that you cannot take small cars on unmaintained / dirt roads. The insurance does not cover damage caused by stones to the wheels or undercarriage of the vehicle.

Online reservations are recommended at some locations. This is my preferred method because it saves calls. However, please note that even if you book your car online, your booking will not be confirmed until someone from the office contacts you. They will contact you via email, phone or WhatsApp to check all the details and then confirm the booking.

Some websites have a general inquiry form or email where you fill in what you want and then they get back to you with availability and prices.

If you just want to order something after you arrive, walk along the pier as you will see many places. I wouldn’t recommend trying it in July or August because everything will be booked up. Similarly, cars may be restricted on other national holidays in Greece.

That being said, if you are traveling to Naxos in winter and want to take a car, many places are closed. Many tourist spots do not spend the winter because the owners have returned to Athens. See below for year-round open leases.

There is a small car rental place at the port. If you arrive by boat, the rental company of your choice will provide you with a dock as a collection point. Most of the car rental offices are located at the port.

Naxos has an airport, so you can pick up your car there too. Since it’s not a big island, you probably won’t be charged for collecting from an island.

Some car rental locations are located at other points around the island, so you will need to travel to their location to collect them. It’s probably best if your accommodation is closer to them and you can get some sort of transfer to your hotel first.

As such, car rental companies will allow you to drive to your hotel. In my experience, they take their papers and you leave the car. However, some places may require you to return to the office to complete the forms.

I booked a car through Avans in November, but accidentally booked it in Paros instead of Naxos. They changed the booking without a problem and gave me a car through Alpha Rentals which is open all winter: +302285400500

You need an EU, UK, Australian or US driving license or an International Drivers Permit (IDP). If you need an IDP, you must collect it before you arrive in Greece.

If you have a US license, you may pay a small fee for the IDP. According to travelers across the Cyclades, not all car rental locations agree on whether or not US licenses are required.
