All four levels offer plenty of options when it comes to accommodation inside. The Fit starts at $17,120 and is usually ranked as one of the stars in its segment, and for good reason.
The latest generation Forte was introduced last year, with the base model combining an impressive range of features with a generous interior and excellent road handling. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 147 hp, but buyers can upgrade to the 201-liter turbocharged 1.6-liter that comes in most Kia vehicles. The Forte has evolved significantly over the years from its humble roots, now sporting the styling of a pocket Stinger. The CVT takes some of the fun out of the Forte and the base engine, but a six-speed manual is also on the menu, as is a seven-speed automatic in GT flavor. Yes, it’s possible to outfit the Forte with more options and a powerful engine and end up with a fun little sedan, but the base model still offers plenty of standard features if you want to keep the open-air price under $20,000.

Overall, the Accent is very well-rounded, although performance and ride quality aren’t as great as some competitors. But when it comes to off-road driving, the Accent is hard to beat for the price.
The Elantra is positioned above the Accent in Hyundai’s lineup; for just a few bucks it works inside out, great engine and great drivetrain. Plenty of standard equipment is there, and while the base 2.0-liter engine isn’t particularly powerful for 2020, the ride is comfortable and the ergonomics are well-arranged. This year, the Elantra has been replaced by a new 2021 model, which is larger and will have a 147-hp 2.0-liter inline-four engine mated to a lower CVT. The upcoming 2021 hybrid model will have a six-speed manual transmission and produce 195 hp.
The Veloster still offers an attractive design, and if you want to get into a $20,000,000 hatchback these days, it’s still a good way to do it. A 2.0-liter four-wheeler is the base engine and can be mated to a manual transmission, while the chassis handles aggressive road behavior. If this sounds like a fun solution on a budget, it really is – and the luggage room is good. The interior is spacious, while the cabin offers plenty of room to stretch out. The Veloster’s passenger-side hood is thankfully retained with the latest styling, plus a host of other changes to an already very practical package. The list climbs to around $30,000 if you want to splurge for the Veloster N, but the real debate is over the model.
