A Compact Car With A Mass Of 725 – Lightyear One, a new solar-powered electric car developed by multiple Solar Challenge winners, was unveiled today, and the startup claims an incredible range of 450 miles (725 km) on a single charge.

The startup first caught our attention because it came out of Solar Team Eindhoven, a group of engineering students from Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands) who compete in the World Solar Challenge with their Stella and Stella Lux, energy-positive solar cars – meaning they consume more , than they consume Can produce more energy.

In general, it is almost impossible to add any significant power to an electric vehicle using solar energy because there is not enough area to install solar cells to supply the energy needed to propel vehicles weighing over 3,000 lbs.

The Future For The Naturally Aspirated Engine Is Grim

To achieve positive energy output, Solar Team Eindhoven designed the Stella Lux to be highly aerodynamic and use lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum.

But turning a vehicle built for student competition into a road-legal vehicle that can be sold to the general public is another matter.

“This moment represents a new era in driving. Two years of dreaming, thinking and hard work have led to this milestone, a giant leap towards our goal of providing clean mobility for all.”

As you can see, this is a very aerodynamic design. The company has focused on efficiency, using its knowledge from years of designing solar cars for the Solar Challenge.

Lightyear Aims To Build Solar Team Expertise Into An Electric Car

“We call these problems over-efficiency. On the one hand, this results in an outstanding range of 725 km (WLTP) with a relatively small battery. On the other hand, it can be charged directly from the sun, as its energy consumption is very low, producing 20,000 kilometers of energy per year. Also, all available charging options are easier to use because you get more range for the same amount of charged power. So, in practice, you charge very quickly from any electrical outlet. You can charge up to 400 km per night from a regular 230V outlet. It’s great for traveling because you don’t need a charging infrastructure.”

The vehicle is a 5-seater and is powered by 4 independent in-wheel motors of unknown power, but not expected to be very powerful for 0-100km/h in “ten seconds”.

They didn’t confirm the size of the battery, but that’s still not the most interesting feature of the car.

Most interestingly, they claim to be able to charge the battery through solar energy generated by the solar cells installed on Lightyear One:

New Coating Chemistries Boost Efficiency For Automakers

“Unlike traditional solar panels, our cells operate independently. This means that even if part of the roof or canopy is in the shade, the other cells continue to efficiently collect solar energy. In fact, our solar cells provide about 20% more energy than conventional ones.”

They claim that it can charge an electric car at a speed of 12 km per hour, which may sound like a lot, but if true, it will really make a difference.

The startup claims that the car will generate energy for an average of 20,000 kilometers per year.

It can fast charge up to 22kW at level 2 and 60kW at level 3.

Immune Monitoring Using Mass Cytometry And Related High Dimensional Imaging Approaches

Lightyear One deliveries are expected to begin in early 2021, but the company warns of slow ramp-up. The first 100 units are already reserved and they are accepting more reservations for other lots to be made later:

If their claims of efficiency and solar power generation are true, then this will be a very interesting car.

If their claim of 12 km/h solar charging is true, that means you could travel 30 km to work, park your car for 8 hours, fully charge it with solar power and drive home without ever plugging in . your car

Also, the roof of a house will always be a more optimal place to generate solar energy than the roof of a car.

Lightyear Unveils Its ‘solar’ Electric Car With 450 Miles Of Range

So given that we’re talking about a €149,000 ($170,000) vehicle here, you have to start thinking that you might be better off buying a cheap electric car and a solar system on the roof.

When you charge at home, your car will be powered by solar energy and in addition, your home will also be powered by solar energy.

Clearly, this car won’t be for many people, but I still think it’s a worthwhile project and will perhaps lead to a wider adoption of solar cells in electric vehicles.
