To prevent a manual transmission vehicle from rolling backwards on a hill, come to a complete stop and apply the parking brake. Then shift into first gear and press the gas pedal until the engine revs to about 3000 RPM. Then lift the clutch and slowly release the handbrake so that the car begins to slowly move forward. When the engine noises start to die down, keep applying the gas and drive the car up the hill. For tips on how to prevent rolling back in an automatic transmission car, read on! The recent rerun of Top Gun, the 1986 predecessor to Tom Cruise’s new fighter blockbuster, was a stark reminder of two things: first, that Cruise is frighteningly ageless; and secondly, that few things match our fond memories of them.
Lexus Lc500 Review
The same is unfortunately true of old cars, which age less gracefully than a Cruise and are (almost always) less wonderful than our minds would have us believe. Indeed, some of us might be inclined to think that the Lexus IS 500 would be spectacular, because what we have here is a compact sports sedan with a big V8 engine, no turbochargers, no hybrid tricks, and no four-wheel drive. No kidding, this thing still has a CD player on board. It’s a dinosaur, just what some car geeks are crying out for. On paper, at least, the IS 500 is more or less a reincarnation of the old BMW M3, an enthusiast favorite since 2008. The new Lexus is only slightly larger, with an extra liter of engine displacement, an extra 58 horsepower and 165 pounds of curb weight. .
Posing in the driver’s seat, the IS 500 greets passengers with a rich new-car smell that can evoke a strong sensory memory for anyone who owned a Toyota in the early 2000s. A button starts the five-liter V8 and an Old Fashioned P-R-N-D lever puts the car in Drive. The engine delivers the unmistakable sub-bass hum of a big V8, but is refined and quiet enough not to make its driver seem anti-social. It’s a Lexus after all.
It should come as no surprise, then, that the IS 500 navigates city streets and highways with unruffled composure. The adaptive suspension is as comfortable as the seats, making it an extremely comfortable sedan.
What it’s not is a sports sedan, despite its V8 engine and resemblance on paper to that old M3. The Lexus spins through corners and the steering is as numb as if it’s been to the dentist and injected full Novocaine to kill all sensation. If you’re hoping for a racing weapon, look instead at Cadillac’s Blackwing sedans or something similar with an M or AMG badge.

But honestly, the world doesn’t need any more annoying track cars with solid rides ready to rock your fill. The relaxed atmosphere of the IS 500 makes it a capable and luxurious example of everyday transport. Drivers don’t have to worry about racing lines or avoiding potholes. Instead, they can just enjoy the throttle and enjoy the way that naturally aspirated V8 engine takes its time to gradually build up speed and noise. It’s perfectly happy cruising around town, but can still navigate a twisty road at a good pace.
In other words, it’s a fast and luxurious sedan. However, if you don’t need the V8 engine, there are plenty of other luxury sedans that are roomier, more fuel-efficient and less expensive, many with more advanced cabins and infotainment systems than this Lexus.

The busy, button-filled interior of the IS 500 feels dated compared to rivals like the upcoming Mercedes C-Class or even the aging BMW 3 Series and Volvo S60. In one week, Lexus consumes 14.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. For comparison, the Honda Civic consumes about seven liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers.
Elbow And Arm Pain After A Car Accident: Causes, Symptoms, & Treatment
There will be some – though probably not many – drivers who just have to have the nostalgic 500 punch of a big old V8 in a good rear-wheel drive chassis.
Still, for drivers who don’t wear rose-tinted glasses—those willing to ditch the old V8 engine and embrace “modern” technology like four-wheel drive and turbochargers—the Lexus looks a lot like the original Top Gun movie: nice, but obviously flawed. and in the end it really doesn’t make sense.
Underrated. Only the 19-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust tips and trunk spoiler indicate that this Lexus has a powerful V8 engine.
Cramped and slightly dated, but well done. The 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo system included in the $4,750 Launch Edition package (the only option fitted to our test car) sounds incredible.

It’s quick and comfortable, a surprisingly rare combination in the compact sedan market. The IS will be beaten in a drag race by its turbocharged rivals, but the Lexus has a good limited-slip differential when the going gets tough.
Lexus includes a wide range of infotainment and safety features as standard, unlike its German rivals, which often make customers pay extra. The main touchscreen looks low resolution and has an outdated user interface.
Adults in the back seats should be prepared to have their knees bent on either side of the front seats. The rear doors and trunk opening are small.

Driving uphill can be difficult, especially if the grade is steep. In particular, if you drive with manual controls, you may experience problems with braking or rolling backwards. Downshifting is key to getting power to the wheels and controlling your speed. Even if you drive a car with an automatic transmission, manual shifting is sensible when driving both uphill and downhill. In addition to mastering shifting, you should also work on your parking and starting techniques. It might take some practice, but you’ll be driving up in no time!
