When To Shift Gear In Motorcycle – Approximate reading time: 2 minutes 50 seconds. Riding a motorcycle is in the right gear, at the right speed, and at the right time. Shifting involves changing gears (upshifts) and downshifts (downshifts) in response to changes in speed and road conditions. Shifting gears is easy to master if you know how.
Note: Improper shifting at high speed can damage the motorcycle’s clutch and transmission.
When To Shift Gear In Motorcycle
B) If it is not in the middle, pull the clutch lever and then start the bike. (Pull until the gear is in neutral or the bike starts moving. If you release the gear, the motorcycle will stop suddenly)

C) Now fully release the clutch lever to fully engage the clutch – full power transfer to the rear wheels while moving forward on the gas pedal. 5) Move and develop speed. (Turn to progressive throttle)
7) To shift to 2nd gear: a) Leave the gas pedal completely (to the end). b) almost simultaneously fully retracting the clutch lever. c) Select 2nd gear d) Release the clutch gradually (but not as gradually as in 1st gear) while increasing the gas pedal as needed.
Note: Shifting a motorcycle is a quick process. All of the above happened quickly. It must be practiced until it becomes a habit.
Method I: Use the brakes to slow down to an appropriate low gear speed, then downshift.

3) Decelerate appropriately (use both brakes) to an acceptable low gear speed. A bicycle is a precision machine, every combination of engine and gearbox revolutions results in a specific speed. Note: 2 (pull the clutch lever) and 3 (slow down as needed) can be done before/after or at the same time. If the speed does not drop too low for the specified gear, the clutch lever must be pulled to stop the engine. you can stop, slow down before pulling the clutch lever. Otherwise, deceleration can be carried out after pulling out the clutch lever.
Method II: This method uses the throttle when downshifting to match engine speed and wheel speed before downshifting. The goal of rev matching is to get the engine speed correct for lower gears – this is a faster method, but takes more practice.
4) Add a quick short burst of gas. (Quickly add a little acceleration, then let go completely – all the way back).
5) Then quickly release the clutch lever. Note that the longer the clutch release delay, the lower the engine rpm/speed during this period, which is undesirable in this technique.

6) Low gear selected, continue driving in low gear, increasing throttle as needed. All bikes now shift with a left foot operated lever. When the transmission is in neutral, a gear is selected by first pushing down and then turning the lever to the center position. Then, hooking yourself to the lever, reach for the second tool. Third gear and all subsequent gears are selected by pulling the lever up after returning to the center position. It sounds difficult, but it is quite easy to do. Everything is not always easy. In the 1970s and earlier, the British made bicycles that shifted with the right foot. Some fell for the first time, and everything else rose. Someone went up for the first time, and the rest went down. Then the Japanese jumped with neutral all the way up and everything else down, or neutral down and everything else up. To make things really interesting, they also come with a rotary switch that switches between 1, 2, 3, 4, neutral, 1, 2, 3, 4, neutral…etc.
Presumably, this is to facilitate driving around the city. All you have to do is downshift again to go into neutral when you hit a stop light. One bike, the Bridgestone 175, even gave you a choice of four gears or five gears up, with the rest sliding down. Crankcase lever of your choice. In addition, until 1965 there was a special neutral between fourth and fifth gears. Some bicycles from the 1920s and earlier also had stem-lever hand shifters. I think it’s good that we have some standards now.
The transmission of a motorcycle consists of gears in fixed engagement. Because of this, there is no synchronization to speed up the transfer. You don’t need anything. The gears are turning. In order to shift between gears, you need some sort of shift mechanism to go with that shifter.
Drum switches are the most common. They come in two flavors. One type holds the shift fork on the drum. In other types, the fork moves in the shafts themselves. Both types use grooves cut into the drum shifters to move the forks back and forth. As the drum rotates, the forks swing back, moving the gears into and out of gear. Those drums need some work done.

Most Japanese engines use some type of shifter. To change gears, you need to turn the drum a little, and then hold it. To change the dog, simply turn the drum a certain amount each time the dog moves. Each time the shift lever is pushed down, the dog moves the drum by the same amount. If the shift lever is pulled up, the dog turns back and moves the drum in the opposite direction by the same amount. The lever moves the dog, and the dog moves the drum. In turn, the drum moves the fork and the shifting fork moves the gear in and out of mesh. The dog pushes against the pins on the replaceable drum, but then the spring pulls the dog back to the middle position and the drum just sits there.
To prevent drum discoloration, a wheel, sometimes called a gear retainer, gear drum stopper, or gear cam stopper, moves into a groove on the gear drum, locking it in position. This wheel is spring loaded. This allows the wheel to move into and out of position as the drum is turned by the dog. Sometimes a spring-loaded plunger is used instead of a wheel. This plunger has a round head that fits into the shift cam or the hole in the shift drum. This chamber, or hole, has a chamfered side that allows the plunger to move smoothly in and out of the hole as the drum rotates. Like everything on a motorcycle, ratchets come in many shapes. The gear shifter on some bikes is adjustable. For easy adjustment, loosen the lock and adjust the dogs to the center position and retighten the lock nut. You usually don’t need to adjust this. This is not quite a high dress! But it can be done.
The shift knob can also be turned using a ratcheting pawl on the end of the drum. There are many types of ratchet dogs depending on the manufacturer. They all work, in general, the same. As the switch shaft rotates, one ratchet locks and the other ratchet rotates. When the shaft of the switch rotates in the other direction, the opposite ratchet locks and the other ratchet turns the shaft. Check the store instructions for the exact method of setting up the alternator.

In the Camplate and Shift Quadrant shift mechanism, the shift fork is placed on the plate. A groove in this plate allows the fork to move the gear back and forth. There are two forms of this type of switch. One has a groove for the shift fork cut right into the shift quadrant itself. Another has a groove where the motor fits into the Camplate where the shift quadrant moves. This style is used mainly in British and European clothing.
Finally we come to the Ball Lock switches. This model of the gearbox became famous thanks to Khodak. A few other Japanese use it too, but Hodaka uses it exclusively on all their bikes from 90cc to 250cc. In a ball lock system, one shaft contains all the gears that are machined on the shaft. The other shaft is hollow and has 4 holes at each gear position. There are balls in each of these holes. The gear rotates around a set of four holes. The gear has four notches on the inside of the gear. The switch head moves back and forth inside the shaft. It pushes out the balls and recesses in each gear. This varies with each instrument. When the next straw is selected, the ball will return to the shaft, releasing the gear.
Since all the gears are connected to each other, you don’t need to use the clutch to shift gears. You are using a clutch
