The sign you made for me is absolutely amazing!!! My stepson is a farmer and also has a seed business, he would love it!! (Christmas gift) If you enter a Jaguar like the XK, you will notice a button marked next to the red starter button. What is it, then? Depending on the make and type, ASL in the car can serve different tasks. Let’s find out what this is.

ASL in a car can mean Automatic Speed Limiter or Automatic Noise Level. While it first appeared in brands like Jaguar and Volvo, you can find the audio leveling feature in the JBL infotainment system in Toyota cars like the RAV-4.
If your car has the ASL – Speed Limiter feature, you can find the ASL button on the steering wheel or near the gear shifter. You can gather more information about this feature in your car’s owner’s manual.
The ASL button in the car activates the Automatic Speed Limiter. This function, found in some Jaguars and other vehicles, limits how fast you can go. The car will accelerate to the maximum speed set by the driver. After that, the top speed of the vehicle is limited until the ASL feature is deactivated.
You can use this feature on your long distance journeys for a comfortable cruising speed that does not tire you. In addition, the Auto Speed Limiter feature can also help you avoid speeding tickets in areas where you don’t know what the speed limit is.

In the context of voice, “ASL” stands for “Automatic Voice Level.” This function will automatically adjust your stereo volume based on some factors that you set. For example, this can make the audio coming out of the stereo louder if traveling at high speeds. ASL in cars is not a common feature, but can be found in some high-end models.
In Toyota cars that use the JBL infotainment system, ASL expands as an Automatic Sound Levelizer. This system keeps the volume level consistent by adjusting the sound according to driving conditions. With the convenience of ASL in the car, you don’t have to adjust the volume every time you drive on different terrain. It is similar to the Auto Sound Level system found in older Toyotas and has four settings: LOW, MID, HIGH, and OFF. A big difference in volume can be felt when you are cruising at a certain speed, say, 20 mph.
A microphone inside the car detects ambient sound levels and automatically adjusts the car’s audio system output (mainly volume) to match. Noise from the road, tires, wind, and other sources tend to increase when the car approaches high speed. As your speed increases, the sound system responds by increasing the power of your sound system, and vice versa when you slow down. How much adjustment you want to make is controlled by the high, medium and low (sensitivity) settings.
ASL automatically compensates for increased ambient noise, increasing the volume of your stereo system. Additionally, ASL amplifies the sound when your car volume is turned up. Instead of manually adjusting the volume when the car is too loud, the ASL feature takes care of everything.
Automatic Sound Levelizer Work At All?
The ASL feature in the car allows you to adjust your volume. Possible options include low, medium, and high. Additionally, you can toggle the ASL feature on most cars with an on/off switch. However, technological advances, such as noise-cancelling sound systems, will likely make ASL in cars obsolete in the near future.
Understanding that the car has two ASL functions – speed limiter and noise leveler – helps, but still doesn’t answer the question of how to tell which ASL button does what. It’s probably easiest to check the owner’s manual, but common sense can often get you the answer. If the ASL Button sits in a common area, such as the wheel or cruise control, it is likely to function as a speed limiter. The proximity of the audio controls suggests it is for sound leveling purposes. Binary sound leveling/volume–either on or off; I don’t see settings for level (low, med, high).
When you drive with high road noise and wind then stop, there is absolutely no change in the volume of the audio system. If I set the volume high to compensate for the wind/road noise, when I turn the volume down the volume is too high. If I set the volume low to compensate for the low wind / road noise, when I take the speed the volume is too low.
I complained about this to the service advisor at my first oil change and was told “the system is in Toyota specifications.”

I really like this feature on my Acura RDX – is it a feature in name only on the RAV4?
Well that’s the most confusing thing! Am I missing a software/firmware update? Can I check the version? Can I upgrade or is it dealer only?

Click to expand… It may depend on the manufacturer of the head unit. My previous Corolla 8″ version of the same radio has different options as well… both units are made by Pelopor.
It seems absurd to me that an updated audio system would have fewer features in this regard. All previous cars have ASL (mostly Acura) including ASL level, not just on or off. I’ve come to really like this feature and not having it on the new RAV4 is just another on the growing list of annoyances.

I have never had much success with the sound leveling system in my RAV4, I just put it on for me. It’s good to know that I’m not together. Maybe some rainy days I will take some time and play with the system.

Maybe we can change the head unit if you like? LOL
