What Are The Vents Under Car Seats – The look isn’t that great and every time I notice them I feel like BMW could have done a better job integrating them properly. Right now, they just seem to come off cheap plastic.
Yes, I think this is a BMW design that hasn’t changed in 20 years. Good thing I never sit in the back seat
What Are The Vents Under Car Seats
Rear passenger floor vents (#9 on the vent diagram…there is one on each side although only 1 is shown on the diagrams). When adjusting the IHKA air distribution to the floor vents… these are the vents that send the air to the rear passengers.

The image below is from the e38/e39 era…but the design architecture is the same with the rear passenger floor vents located under both passenger seats

They do, but when you look at them, they look like some cheap plastic that overheated and warped. It’s been like this since my first BMW. Probably the same part number
Wait until something sticks to it and you hear it roll. Happened to my X3. I had to take the end piece off to attach the vacuum extension to suck it up. I couldn’t reach him.

You must be 4′ tall to see them. I’m 6’4″ and never see my place in them almost all the way back.
It is most noticeable under the passenger seat. I never noticed this in my previous car as the seat structure was lower to the floor
It covers the “ugly hole in the floor syndrome” but as someone mentioned, more to prevent the various critters on the floor (marbles, M&M’s, bag contents, coins) from finding their way into the inaccessible HVAC ducts underneath carpet. At least the BMW’s vents are slightly raised above the surface – the Audi’s were flush with the carpet.
Ford Explains Why 2021 Bronco Lacks Center Air Vents For Rear Passengers
Looks good aesthetically, but will reduce air output for rear seat riders if you care. Visible as about a 70% reduction in airflow. If this becomes a problem, e.g. your back seat riders complain that they can’t get warm, their feet are cold, you can always take a Dremel tool or a precision knife to that.
Or just tell them to sit still, sit still, do it now and do it happily and enjoy the plushness of it.

I guess you learn something everyday, I thought those vents were from the subwoofer… Personally they don’t bother me

It hasn’t cooled enough to tell yet, but the reduction will depend on the speed of the air coming out of the vent, and I expect the airflow to be quite slow. The effect on the Q7 was nil, although the covers seem to significantly restrict airflow. They serve the very practical purpose of preventing dropped objects from finding their way into HVAC ducts and under the floor. I expect the actual reduction to be closer to 10-15% at peak heat, although I don’t have a flowmeter to measure. Not enough to make a practical difference as it is a closed system and any reduction would result in increased flow to another vent, but fluid dynamics has never been my forte.
There are several suppliers and they all seem to be from the same place in China – I just found the cheapest one that seemed relevant.
My concern would be the increased noise making a “hissing” sound as the air moves through the holes.
The smooth open design of the floor vents is designed to reduce ambient noise and increase maximum airflow.

For example, half-close the B-pillar vents behind the front seats in our new X5 and you’ll immediately hear them as air flows through them. Open them all the way and they are silent. I followed a paper noise when it was on the throttle and looked under the passenger seat. I found a bunch of stickers with chair model numbers etc. Some of the stickers were stuck on badly, with their corners hanging off, which I think is the culprit for the sound (sounds like tissue paper vibrating).
Anyway, I saw those vents (?) down there and was curious what they were for. Part of the HVAC system? Does anyone knows?

Keys In Vent Under Seat?!

Sent from my iPhone via Tapatalk Click to expand… This is my first VW so I’m not 100% sure but most people want heat in their legs and those under seat vents fit the bill. As for the center console, the truth is that I did not check. This can work in conjunction with those under the seat or the console vents can be for air conditioning. Now I’m curious and want to know exactly what consoles do!
Most passenger cars I’ve been in have these rear seat vents. Citizens have them and so do my friends with 90s Camrys.
Every VW I’ve had has read seat heater vents just like that. Have you ever bothered to look at your OM?
These are for when you have the foot switch on the climate control knob, which is usually used in conjunction with the heater…

Those vents are actually a Bose subwoofer system that brings sound from the sonar into the engine bay. This is to ensure that the people in the back seat get that loud fake engine sound!

Wow, not to be sarcastic, but this is a great example of how unfamiliar people are with logic and intuition. How difficult it can be to draw a line between ventilation and air conditioning. Hopefully that curiosity won’t lead anyone to actually look under the hood.
