The 2022 5-passenger Grand Cherokee lineup begins with the Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve trim levels. Initially, Jeep offers a standard V6 engine with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) or a V8 engine with four-wheel drive. A Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) model will arrive in 2022.
In addition to the first electrified version of the nameplate, highlights of the redesigned 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee include significant improvements in infotainment, comfort and safety technology combined with the traditional styling, driving dynamics and off-road capabilities that have characterized the model for decades.

Unless you’ve raised the available Quadra-Lift air springs to maximize ground clearance, as I did during an off-road adventure in the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, this SUV is easy enough to get in and out of. That’s especially true when you kneel down the SUV’s air suspension in Exit mode, which takes the Grand Cherokee to its lowest setting in just seven seconds.
Regardless of trim level, every test vehicle had a power seat that offered plenty of comfort and support. Even the fabric-covered Laredo had heated front seats and steering wheel, and the Summit Reserve’s supple premium leather seats had ventilation and a massage function.
Once aboard, you’ll notice improved outward visibility compared to the previous generation Grand Cherokee. This is partly due to the lower waist and larger glass area. Still, the new Grand Cherokee also offers a variety of camera views, including a rearview mirror and an off-road camera that looks ahead and overlays the projected tire path of the upcoming terrain on the screen.

The layout of the controls is straightforward, but the glossy black interior of some models can suffer from reflections that make them difficult to see and use. Also, Jeep uses a rotary knob for a shifter, and it took me a few tries to get the hang of it. Too many times I had chosen to drive in front of park, release the brake and want to get out before I realized the damn thing was moving.
A 10.25-inch digital instrument display is standard, and most versions have an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. A larger 10.1-inch screen is available on all trims except Laredo. Below the infotainment system, a mix of stereo and climate controls provide quick access to common functions.
Every version of the Grand Cherokee reflects quality. In fact, when you drive the Laredo, it feels more substantial than you’d expect from a base trim model. Many vehicles feel engineered to a minimum standard and then receive additional soundproofing materials, leather, wood and technology to pass the premium test. In contrast, the new Grand Cherokee sounds and feels like it was built to a higher standard, and then Jeep figured out how to discount it to match the Laredo’s price point. Either way, if your budget calls for buying the Laredo, you won’t feel like settling for less.
Backseat space is tight for adults, and the hard plastic front seatbacks hurt when knees and shins hit them. Grand Cherokee buyers who plan to regularly transport larger passengers will prefer the more spacious Grand Cherokee L model.

Jeep says the Grand Cherokee’s new Uconnect 5 infotainment technology offers dramatically faster input response, sharp and clean high-definition graphics, greater ability to customize content and save settings, and an improved user experience. Over-the-air software updates improve technology over time.
Pairing my iPhone XS with Bluetooth wasn’t a problem, and it’s relatively easy to set up personal settings – especially if you’re comfortable with modern technology. The voice recognition system also works well, responding quickly and accurately to almost all of my common test commands and questions.
There is a clear improvement in the quality of the sound system. The base equipment in the Laredo was just right, the alpine speakers in the Limited were an improvement. But they couldn’t match the outstanding McIntosh components in the Overland and Summit Reserve test vehicles.
Driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee is fun. They sit high on the road and have standard suspension that offers a compliant ride without completely filtering out what’s happening to the tires on the road surface. Trailhawks have off-road suspension that is firmer and off-road tires that buzz the pavement. Quadra-Lift air suspension with adaptive damping is available, eliminating unwanted ride and body movement while raising for extra ground clearance or lowering for easier entry and exit.
Life With The Jeep Grand Cherokee: What Do Owners Really Think?
The standard engine is a proven 3.6-liter V6 with 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It drives the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission, unless you choose one of three 4WD systems. The V6 can tow up to 6,200 pounds.
A more robust and satisfying, but ultimately thirsty, 5.7-liter V8 engine is available, and you have to buy all-wheel drive. With 357 horses on tap, it is not much more powerful than the V6. But the 390 pound-feet of torque represents a big jump in driving power. Maximum towing with the engine is 7,200 pounds, and the V8 also uses an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Over nearly 100 miles of driving, I averaged a paltry 17 mpg in combined driving with the V8. Believe it or not, that matches Jeep’s estimate for the engine. The V6 proved more efficient, delivering 21.3 mpg in combined driving, slightly better than its 21 mpg estimate.
Owners didn’t like the fuel economy of the previous-generation Grand Cherokee, and they probably won’t rate this new one much higher. Perhaps some will opt for the upcoming Grand Cherokee 4xe, a PHEV version of the SUV that will offer a handful of pure electric miles and should improve efficiency when run as a gas-electric hybrid. 4xe will arrive sometime in 2022.

Some of my favorite features included the front sway bar disconnect system, which increases front wheel articulation, and the Selec-Speed Control, which allows the driver to focus on steering over, around and between obstacles without having to worry about accelerating and braking. .
The most useful feature, however, was the forward-facing camera. Not only does it provide a clear 180-degree view of what’s directly ahead of the Grand Cherokee, but it also overlays yellow predicted tire tracks on the screen, so you can add just the right amount of steering to navigate obstacles and avoid hazards .

Without a doubt, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk deserves its Trail Rated Fender badge. But the majority of buyers will not subject their vehicles to similar extremes. Instead, they drive their Grand Cherokees to and from work, around town, hauling kids and running errands and going on road trips.
