Pack 99 follows the rules provided by the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. All vehicles must pass inspection during pre-registration to be eligible to race for trophy prizes.
1. Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are allowed. Scouts must use the kit provided to them in Pack 99.
Pinewood Derby Ladder Car Body
The wheels provided with the kit must be used. Wheels cannot be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You can remove the stitches from the wheels.
Drilled holes can be used for axles instead of complete slots, however, widening the wheelbase is not allowed.
The axle supplied with the kit must be used. It can be polished or lubricated with dry graphite.
The wood provided in the kit must be used. The blocks can be shaped in any way you want.

5. Details, such as the steering wheel and the driver are allowed as long as these details do not exceed the maximum height, width and weight specifications.
8. Each time the vehicle must undergo inspection, the owner will be informed of the cause of the failure, and given time during the official weigh-in to make adjustments.
10. After final approval, the car will not be inspected again unless the car is damaged during handling or the race.

Leaders: Make sure you give a copy of the Council rules when you hand out the car kit. You don’t want a car that wins at Pack level to be disqualified from District and Council races because it doesn’t meet Council specifications.

We have seen many lane timers on the Internet. The timer of choice is the K3 Fast Track made by MicroWizard. It cost $195 in kit form in 2002. It was $275 in 2008 for our second track. The pinewood derby is one of Cub Scouting’s most popular and successful family events. The Pinewood Derby car is a small wooden model made by Cub Scouts with the help of their families. Then they race cars in a competition. Cars are driven on gravity and rundown tracks. Most packs have a pinewood derby every year. Can run indoors or outdoors. Each boy can design and build his own “grandprix” race car.
Only official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits distributed by the Pack will be allowed. Cars that have raced in previous years will not be accepted. Also, starter devices and motorized vehicles are not allowed.
Widthof Nose: The nose of the vehicle must have a minimum flat area of 1/4 inch. A flat area can be cut to form a radius.
Width Between Wheels: The minimum distance between the base of the tire and the base of the vehicle is 3/8 inch.

Weight: The maximum weight of the car is 5 ounces. The official scale reading will determine the official weight. (The United States Post Office is a good place to evaluate your vehicle especially if it has a self-service kiosk machine. These machines are accessible after the service counter is closed. Additional materials are allowed including (but not limited to) weights, steering wheels, figurines, decorations, spoilers, fenders, etc. as long as the dimensions and weight requirements are met. All additional materials must be permanently attached to the vehicle in a manner that does not interfere with the normal operation of the vehicle, track, gate, or timing device. It is forbidden to move the parts attached to the car body (except the wheels).
The weight must be stable and stay in the car. It should be flush with the bottom of the car or recessed if attached to the bottom of the car. Liquid weights and/or movable weights are not permitted.
Dry grease can be used on car axles. No other type of lubricant is allowed. Lubricants can be used before registration or before the start of the race in the sports area. No grease should be brought into the building unless provided
