How To Unlock Your Car – Locking your keys in your car can be frustrating, to say the least, especially when you’re in a hurry to get somewhere. You can always call AAA Roadside Assistance or a locksmith, but you may have to pay some cash and wait for them to come to you. You may even be dragged away.
Luckily, there are some DIY ways to open your car doors when you’re cornered, and I’m not talking cheating methods like using your phone or tennis balls. To pick a lock without a key, try shoelaces, a car antenna, or even windshield wipers.
How To Unlock Your Car
These lock hacks may sound unbelievable, but they do work, although it all depends on the make and model of the vehicle. Newer cars and trucks equipped with automatic locks and security systems will be harder to get into — but not impossible. You can try at least one of these tricks before calling an expensive professional to do it for you.
How Much Does A Locksmith Cost To Unlock Your Car?
It may seem like an impossible task, but you can open the door in seconds with just a shoelace. Take a shoelace from one of the shoes (another type of rope will work too) and tie a slipknot in the middle of it, which you can tighten by pulling on the end of the rope.
Holding one end of the rope in each hand, slide it around the corner of the door, and use a back and forth motion to lower it low enough for the knot to slide over the handle. Once in place, pull on the cord to taut it and up to unlock.
This method won’t work on cars with locks on the sides of the doors, but if the doors have handles on top (as shown in the screenshot above), it has a good chance of success. 🇧🇷
As long as the top of the door can be opened at least a little bit, the car can be unlocked with wooden chocks, air chocks, and levers. Grab the wooden wedge first and slide it over the top of the door. In order not to damage the paint, place a cover (preferably plastic) around the spacer.

If you think you might be doing too much, invest in a set of wedges or inflatable wedges and a long-reach tool.
Slide the air wedge next to the wooden wedge and pump air in to create more distance between the car and the door. Push the wooden wedge in as far as it will go until there is a decent gap. Finally, slide the lever through the opening in the door and carefully unlock the door using the locking mechanism on the side.
If you don’t have an air wedge, you probably don’t have it. It will be harder to do, but the video below makes it look easy.
If the locking mechanism is on the top instead of the side, you can use plastic straps, which may be easier than shoelaces. With or without an air wedge, you still need to open the door somehow.
Who Can Unlock A Car When You’re Locked Out?
One of the most common ways to unlock your car doors is with a modified wire coat hanger, a DIY slim Jim. The principle is the same. This method is best for manually locking the door; for automatic locks, see one of the other methods.
With the help of pliers, loosen the hanger so one side is straight and the other is hooked, you will use this to pull up the control arm inside the door that attaches to the lock bar.
Then, slide the hanger down between the window and weatherstripping until the hanger is about 2 inches below where the window and door meet, near the inside door handle where the arm would normally rest. (You should look up diagrams for your specific vehicle make and model online ahead of time, as locations may vary.)
Rotate the hitch until it faces inwards, then remove the control arm, which isn’t always easy to find. Once locked, go up and the door will open.

Also, the hanger trick only works with certain locking mechanisms, usually on older cars, so it may not work on newer models. With newer cars, you can still use a coat hanger, but you have to place it between the door and the rest of the car (as in method #2) to unlock it from the inside.
On older models with a certain style of exterior handle, as shown in the screenshot below, you can simply use the car’s antenna to unlock the doors from the outside.
Simply unscrew the antenna, carefully place it inside the door handle and move it around until the lock starts to wiggle. Once you see it making a connection, push the antenna forward and the door will unlock.
You can usually remove your car’s windshield wipers fairly easily, but the method is different for each model. No matter what car you have, windshield wipers can save you from having to call a locksmith to open locked doors.

First, remove the front wipers from the car. If your window is ajar or you manage to open the door, you can get the car in. Use the cleaner to pick up the key from the chair or press the unlock button on the side of the door (I tried it successfully in the video below).
You can use almost anything long enough to get through your windows, but if you’re in a hurry and can’t see anything around to get through the crack, windshield wipers are your best bet.
