Decayed and thin dentures are at risk of breakage. The most common cause of fractures is ill-fitting dentures. In addition to mechanical stress, the reasons are more complex. Prolonged wearing of dentures with minimal denture tissue rest can irritate the soft tissues, depriving them of their blood supply and resorption of the supporting bone base. Unbalanced dentures can move in the mouth and cause more force to be applied to certain areas (and thus microfractures). Impact injuries from loose dentures falling out of the mouth are also common. In an emergency, you can use a denture restoration kit to temporarily restore your dentures. However, it is not recommended to try to restore the tooth yourself. If your dentures break, the first step you should take is to call your dentist and make an appointment to have your dentures repaired or replaced as soon as possible. However, sometimes you need to fix your tooth sooner rather than going to the dentist. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to fix your dentures yourself. This self-healing should be temporary until you go to the dentist.
And only the damage you can fix yourself. If your dentures are broken in half, there’s a good chance your denture restoration kit isn’t good enough. As long as the bonding material is safe for dental use, such as an FDA-approved denture restoration kit, you can try it to repair large cracks in your denture. But you may have to wait until you see your dentist for a restoration.
Drugstores like CVS and Walgreens often sell denture restoration kits, also available on Amazon, that you can use to restore your dentures in an emergency. These kits can be used to repair dental damage such as cracked, broken and loose teeth. These approved kits contain bonding material that can help temporarily repair a break or crack until you can go to the dentist.

Denture restoration kits come with a gel-like adhesive. You may need to mix the glue yourself following the directions that came with the kit. After the glue has set, use a small spatula to carefully apply it along the cracked or chipped edges of the denture. Then, press the toothpicks together and hold for five minutes. You need to make sure that your dentures are always perfectly aligned.
Next, after the glue has dried, remove any excess glue left on the denture. Soak dentures in warm (but not boiling) water for ten minutes to clean. Carefully blot off the toothpaste and remove rough spots with sandpaper. Afterwards, wash the toothpaste, spatula, and hands with soap and water.
It is important not to use adhesives or other adhesives not designed for dental use. Any non-dental adhesives must not get into your mouth or it will cause problems. If you need emergency repairs to your dentures, you should look for a denture repair kit that includes an FDA-approved protective bonding material.

When my dentist told me that my upper denture was broken in half and couldn’t be easily repaired, that was the first question I asked.

At first, I dismissed the idea. Superglue is a very strong substance that gives off toxic fumes and I don’t want it near my mouth.
Also, the packaging states that superglue should not be used to restore permanently damp items. I don’t know if a person’s mouth counts as “wet” or simply “wet”.
However, when I thought about it more (which I tend to do when I’m missing a few front teeth when measuring and making new dentures) I decided it was worth a try.
For starters, superglue is only toxic in its liquid state. That said, inhaling exhaust fumes can be harmful during any repair.

When Superglue dries, it becomes plastic in nature. It’s tough and doesn’t seem to degrade. In fact, very few (other than acetone) can break down superglue into a liquid or gaseous state after it has cured and hardened.
Second, its ultra-fast and strong adhesive properties only work in liquid form. Once dry, there is little danger of it sticking to anything else.
(I use the word “almost” because I can’t prove this statement is infallible, and I don’t want to shut people up and blame me.)
Third, it seems to me (not a chemist, of course) that Superglue solidifies into a different substance than the pink resinous substance that makes up the base of toothpaste.

Fourth, the toothpick breaks cleanly (I can easily push the two parts of the toothpick together).
In the end, it was a temporary fix – about a month of wear and tear. If the seal isn’t perfect, or if it’s not very smooth, I have to take it out and eat it. I needed something to restore my smile and minimize the chance of my natural upper teeth moving slightly while waiting for new dentures.
As with any project involving Superglue, you should take precautions to make sure the glue doesn’t get on your skin, eyes, mouth, or anywhere else you don’t want it to stick.
Also, I’ve read that cotton swabs react violently with superglue (and even burn), so don’t try to use them to move the glue (you don’t need tiny cotton threads anyway. The wool will get stuck in your toothpick.)

The underside of the denture (on the roof of the mouth) is a little rough on the joints. I’d be very upset if this was a permanent solution, but it’s perfectly usable in the short term.
I am able to eat, drink and brush my teeth normally. The Modern Superglue is pretty waterproof, so that’s not an issue I think.
I don’t see any adverse effects from performing this procedure. When you consider the various chemicals in toothpaste gum, including zinc, you’re not too bad.
