“Many of today’s structures are based on appearance rather than tilting, rotating or traveling long distances; Chopper, bobber and cafe gas tanks are getting smaller and the fill intervals are getting ridiculous. We came up with a vague plan to bring the big tanks back into bike building.
How Big Is A Motorcycle Gas Tank
We were already in the man cave of Griffin Motorcycles looking for an ’84, BMW R80, so we decided to look for an original Carl Heinrich Long Range Tank. We managed to find one in Germany … it was twelve thousand. So Oki called in his partners from overseas at OldWheels and had them work on a hand-built 45-liter gas tank based on the original German design. The bike wasn’t just designed to be something that could travel over 400km between fill-ups, we wanted to build something that could be stationary and high-speed like that.

“We decided to replace the BMW forks with a 2008 R1 USD front end, all anodized. We added an Ohlins shock to the rear and replaced the clamshell calipers with Brembo 4 pots. Most of the pins and brackets are made by Griffin Motorcycles, as well as the custom bonded wheels.
The most time-consuming aspect of the build was the handcrafted exhaust. runs under the frame and behind the gearbox, before splitting into left and right trumps.
