The mules performed well for the first part of the parade, but when they reached the junction which usually leads to the depot, they were unstoppable, and the last part of the carnival route was missed. Mules were also used for racing, although less successfully than horses. Looking at the race papers, there are big names like Dirty Sox, ABC Bear, Old Sox, Oscar Wilde, Red Head Bob and Ellie Banana!

These days, mules don’t work in New Orleans’ garbage department, but pull wagons for tourists. Their hours are strictly controlled (a maximum of eight hours per day in winter and seven hours in summer). They work five days a week, take at least three months off and undergo regular inspections. If the temperature exceeds 95°F (35°C), they are stopped and returned to their stalls.

I can confirm these observations by discussing temperature and humidity between the police and the New Orleans Human Rights and Rescue Society.
