If you listen to My First Million Podcast (if you shouldn’t), you’ll have heard Sam Parr and Shaan Puri discuss RockAuto.com on the December 9th podcast (see clip below). At the end of the clip, Sam estimated that Rock Auto could generate more than $100 million in annual revenue. As you can imagine, this piqued my interest and I started watching Rock Auto on December 11th.
As Sam and Shaan point out, RockAuto.com gets about 20 million website visitors per month (according to Similar Web). 96% of Rock Auto’s traffic comes from Direct (62%) and Search (34.83%).
The top paid search term for Rock Auto is “Auto Parts”. This term averages 1 million monthly searches, but the competition for this term is low and the top page bid is estimated to be between $0.53 and $2.87.
Their Rock Auto brand averages 950,000 searches. Over the past 12 months, search volume has been fairly consistent with a slight decline in the fourth quarter (October, November and December).

Rock Auto uses a network of suppliers to fulfill all of its orders. For example, I bought a radiator cap from them. Package is from “RockAuto Returns Dept” at 1200 State Fair BLVD Syracuse NY 13209. If you search for this address, you will find that it is the address of United Auto Supply.
Rock Auto received my order, forwarded it to United Auto Supply for fulfillment. United Auto Supply applied Rock Auto tape (yes, branding tape to seal the box) and put the Rock Auto name on the shipping label.
According to my order number tracking, Rock Auto is receiving more than 70,000 orders per day for the last 11 days. That’s a lot of orders to take in a day. If I extrapolate that for the month, they get a little over 2.1 million orders per month.
Based on their estimated website traffic, this would give Rock Auto about a 10% conversion rate. This is a very high number, but not out of the realm of possibility. The traffic to your website is highly targeted and probably only visits your page when they need to buy auto parts. This can justify a 10% conversion rate.

It’s hard to love. Rock Auto has over 1 million skus. The price ranges from $0.99 to $1000 or more. But after scanning their items, it appears that most items are between $5 and $50. They charge between $2.99 and $36.99 for shipping.
It’s impossible for me to estimate exactly what their average order value is, but let’s say their average order value is $30 (seems fair, maybe a little low). At $30 per order and 2.1 million orders this month, their revenue in December will be $63 million.
Can they make $63 million a month? That’s more than $700 million in annual revenue.
I’m still not sure Rock Auto’s order volume is realistic. I’ve confirmed that their order numbers are consistent, but I still can’t believe they order over 70,000 a day. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the order number is set when the cart is created (ie the item is added to the cart). So what we can look at is the total number of carts created (regardless of whether the order was completed or not).
Update On The 2007
Rock Auto’s e-commerce site is building itself. They do not use any Shopify, Big Commerce, Demandware or other e-commerce solutions. So I can’t recreate their e-commerce system to see if it’s a cart number and then it becomes an order number.
If their order numbers are per cart numbers, we can assume that 30-50% of them go on to complete their order. At the same $30 AOV, this would give Rock Auto an estimated annual revenue of $210-350 million. Tom Taylor, vice president of marketing and co-owner of Rock Auto, says he and his family were very lucky to meet the “car collector.” they founded an online auto parts retailer in the middle of the Dot Com bubble. According to its website, Rock Auto’s goal is to “uncover the information hidden behind the auto parts store counter” and make auto parts affordable. After more than 20 years in business, with Rock Auto now a household name among car enthusiasts, it’s fair to say the mission has been successful.
