Do Massage Therapists Wear Gloves – There are many wonderful things about being a massage therapist. Some of them are big and obvious: helping people heal, being your own boss, building strong therapeutic relationships with regular clients… the list goes on. And some less, but not less. One of the sometimes underrated little perks of the job: the uniform is so comfortable!

Massage therapy is a physical profession, and a massage therapist’s wardrobe must be appropriate for the job. RMTs need their clothing to meet a number of practical requirements. So what are the work clothes for a massage therapist?

Of course, there is no universal uniform that all massage therapists wear. Therapists choose their attire based on the clinic environment, personal preferences, and other factors.

But regardless of where a massage therapist works, there are some general principles that they all follow. In this blog post, we provide an overview of general clothing, footwear, personal presentation and PPE for massage therapists.

When it comes to clothing, the first priority for massage therapists is always practicality. Everything they wear is chosen to help them do their jobs efficiently, safely and comfortably.

For most RMTs, the easiest way to tick all these boxes is to wear scrubs or a top with comfortable trousers. Scrubs look professional and cut well, are lightweight and hold up well with frequent washing. There is good news for those who want a touch of fashion along with functionality. Scrubs have come a long way in recent years and are available in tons of flattering styles, colors, and patterns.

A lot of people get into massage therapy because it’s not a desk job and they get up and move around all day. But being on your feet stops the fun when those feet start to hurt! Choosing comfortable, well-fitting shoes is a wise investment IN. Massage therapists wear pads that provide plenty of support and cushioning for the feet. Cushioning is especially important for therapists working in treatment spaces with hard floors such as laminate, linoleum, and tile.

Since the onset of Covid-19, massage therapists around the world have focused on keeping themselves and their clients safe, following public health guidelines set by governments and professional organizations. This includes increasing the amount of personal protective equipment (PPE) they wear on the job.

However, the use of personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves is not new to massage. There are certain techniques and situations that require special equipment to keep both the massage therapist and their client safe.

Take TMJD massage for example. Temporomandibular joint disorders are a group of conditions that can cause jaw pain and tightness, headaches, difficulty opening the mouth all the way, and sounds when the jaw moves. It usually results from tension in the muscles of the face, jaw, and neck as a result of stress, trauma, or postural dysfunction. Massage can be an extremely effective treatment for TMJD. Therapists use both extraoral and intraoral methods. Extra-Oral Extra-Oral Remedies: RMT massages the neck, face and head. Intraoral Remedies: The RMT massages the cheek and jaw muscles from inside the client’s mouth. Massage therapists always wear disposable gloves when performing intraoral work.

One more thing while we’re on the subject of Covid-19 precautions: Most Canadian jurisdictions are beginning to loosen public health restrictions they put in place to combat the pandemic, including regulations on massage therapy clinics. This is exciting because it’s a sign that all of our dedication and hard work (and time spent waiting in line for vaccinations) has paid off! But as we all know, we are not out of the woods yet. So while many mandatory restrictions have been lifted, many massage therapists are choosing to keep some covid-19 regulations in place for now. Some clinics still ask their customers to wear masks and many still wear masks themselves. This is because many people who use massage as part of their care routine are in higher risk groups. By temporarily maintaining certain rules, therapists ensure that their clinics remain safe spaces for their most vulnerable clients. When booking your next massage, be sure to double check their latest clinic policies so you know what to expect!
