Sheehy Auto Stores is leveraging the market expertise and used sales operations of the Harley-Davidson stores it acquired last year to handle motorcycle trade-ins more efficiently.

It is not unusual to see some wheels sitting on the side of the service station. But at Sheehy Subaru in Springfield, VA, that pair of wheels is attached to a 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special.

Sporting gold flake paint adorned with flame, the bike is on loan from Patriot Harley-Davidson, which was acquired by dealership owner, Sheehy Auto Stores in March 2015 to add a new dimension to its portfolio.
The Harley store is more than just adding to the Sheehy group’s bottom line, which now includes nearly two dozen new vehicle dealerships. By leveraging the motorcycle market expertise and the dealership’s used sales operation, Sheehy’s Auto dealers now have a more efficient way to handle motorcycle trade-ins.
“Talks have been going on for years,” said Brandon Stanhope, managing director of Sheehy Subaru. “There is a market for trading motorcycles from a convenience point of view, but when we bought the store it was made much easier.”
Since Sheehy purchased the Harley store, Stanhope says, he has taken about 20 motorcycle trade-ins from customers who bought a new Subaru. His most recent: a customer who moved from out of state to a suburb of Washington, DC, and traded in an old BMW R100S for a new Subaru WRX STI hot hatchback.

Acceptance of a motorcycle exchange was a time challenge. Stanhope would have to call nearby motorcycle or power sports dealers to determine the trade-in price and find a buyer.
John Adamson, COO of Sheehy Auto Stores, recalls the same struggle from his days as a general manager of an auto dealership, saying that local motorcycle dealers often made lowball offers. On top of that, many motorcycle owners just don’t know that a car dealership can accept a motorcycle as a trade-in, he says.
Now, all it takes is a phone call to Patriot Harley to get the offer and make arrangements to pick up the bike. Adamson says that in addition to the 20 motorcycle trades that Stanhope accepted, Sheehy’s other auto stores took about 20 to 25.
“Car dealerships have always struggled with how to do a motorcycle business,” Adamson said. “All we’re trying to do is make it easy for the customer and get as much as possible for their bike.”

Sheehy Subaru also caters to those who miss riding a bike. The store allows service customers to pick up one of the store’s approximately 50 Subaru service providers at Patriot Harley, about 10 miles away, and rent a motorcycle while their Subaru is being serviced.
Stanhope says the deal surprises customers, who sometimes ask rhetorically if the Road Glide Special on display could be their service provider.

I upgraded the comfort pilot seat and changed the exhaust cover and header from chrome to black. It is in showroom condition with no scratches or blemishes. MSRP is 13399 plus taxes and concession fees etc. ($15877 in total). If I get a good price @ 15K or so, I can trade in it, or I can keep riding because this bike is fun. Do you think this is realistic? Your help is appreciated.
You need to decide if it is worth leaving the title and keys to yourself or if you are really undecided if you want to trade or sell for the first time.

It depends where you live. In WA State, the exchange actually deducts the purchase price of the new bike. It saves you sales tax, and it saves you on overcharged license plates here and there.

You will get less and less business. They have to clean, make the documents and list, possibly keeping for several months. So it depends on how bad the seller wants that specific bike, and if they have a backlog of people waiting for one. I went to trade a bike this year and the guy said he could give me a better price if I could hold it for 24 hours and show it to two people. One of them really wanted it and gave me about 1200 more, as there was no risk on his part that he would sell it immediately.
You always make more money selling direct, but you have to deal with nasty people all the time. People trying to trade or negotiate, and sometimes end up trying to hit for money. It depends on how much you hate dealing with people.
There are some shops that will take your bike on delivery and list it on their site (probably better traffic), but they charge 3-7% for that service. So they handle the money and escrow etc. and you pay when the title is transferred. I did this once with a bike I was having trouble selling (low demand in the US for this specific bike).
You can type your bike (2018 Indian Scout Bobber KBB) in the search. Go to KBB and they will show you the average sales price in your area, and then give you an estimate of the trade in. This is usually quite a difference. The seller has to make money. Listing a bike on CycleTrader for an average retail price from KBB has given me good results many times.

I have had good luck with CycleTrader. Avoid craigslist because there are so many scammers. You’ll usually have less trade in your bike, but it’s still a unique shop. I don’t know where used bike prices are right now because I’m not in the market, but the used truck market is ridiculous. I traded my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 on a new truck and it was 1,500 less than I paid for it in 2008. Best wishes on your sale.
