Holly Patterson in Uniondale next week to help with the labor shortage, officials said Saturday.
The program is part of a larger deployment of 120 National Guard medical personnel to a number of nursing homes and senior facilities across the country that have suffered staffing shortages due to the pandemic, officials said.
The state will send 10 medical teams from the state’s National Guard to A. Holly Patterson expanded care in Uniondale to help with staffing shortages.

Three more confirmed cases of the omicron variant have been detected — all in New York — bringing the state’s total to eight, state officials said Saturday.

“We worked with nursing homes across the state to identify where these medical teams would have the greatest impact on regional health systems,” said state Department of Health spokeswoman Erin Silk.

The 10 National Guard medical teams are scheduled to arrive at the Uniondale facility early this week, and the facility will decide what duties they will perform, National Guard spokesman Richard Goldenberg said. They will stay as long as needed, he said.
“Across the country, various nursing homes are experiencing staff shortages. We will provide additional staff,” he said.

Goldenberg said it’s hoped the effort will allow more hospitalized patients to return to their nursing facilities and free up space in hospitals.
Guardsmen have a level of medical training similar to civilian EMTs, said state National Guard spokesman Eric Dorr.
“The difference between them and a civilian AMT is that our medics are trained to do this while someone is shooting at them,” he said.
Medical staff will continue to be paid by the federal government and receive a housing allowance, he said. They will usually be placed in teams of two.

Many long-term care facilities were already experiencing staff shortages before COVID-19. The pandemic – and the vaccination mandate for these workers – caused more staff to leave.
So far, arrangements have also been made to deploy teams to: Shaker Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albany County; Monroe County Community Hospital; and Loretto Health and Rehabilitation Center in Onondaga County.
Other sites include MVHS Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Oneida County; Clinton County Nursing Home; Willow Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Broome County; Cattaraugus County Pines Health and Rehabilitation Centers; Erie County Balcony View Long Term Care Facility; and Wayne County Nursing Home.
More than 1,000 National Guard personnel have been involved in the pandemic effort for about 18 months, Goldenberg said. They served in virus and vaccine testing sites and in food distribution efforts.

Elsewhere, the eight omicron variant cases now confirmed in New York are all in the South: seven New Yorkers and one from Suffolk County, according to officials.
The Long Island case is a 67-year-old woman who recently returned from South Africa, Gov. Kathy Hochul said. The woman tested positive on Tuesday.
“We knew the Omicron version was coming and we expect to see more cases. But let me make it clear: we are not vulnerable,” Hohol said Saturday. “We have the tools to help prevent the spread of this deadly virus: get your vaccine, get your booster and wear your mask. Let’s use these tools to protect ourselves and our loved ones as we approach the holidays.”
State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said officials are seeing the beginning of community spread of the omicron variant.

“At this point, we don’t know how quickly Omicron will spread or how severe the symptoms of Omicron will be,” Bassett said. “What we’re seeing is that the increase in the number of cases in New York State continues to be traced back to the delta variant. We encourage all New Yorkers to use the best prevention tools we have: get vaccinated, brace yourself and wear a mask. .”
While all of these cases are unrelated to the recent Animé NYC convention at the Javits Center, the state continues to encourage everyone who attended to get tested for COVID-19 and wear a mask in public. A Minnesota man who tested positive for the omicron variant attended the conference last month.
The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19-related illnesses rose by 91 to 3,198 in New York, state officials said Saturday. This included 494 newly admitted patients.
A total of 42 people have died from illness linked to the virus, including two in Suffolk and one in Nassau, officials said.
